Kimberli Milhoan, Co-Founder at Greatstone Wealth

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in West Virginia, surrounded by mountains and good people. I spent some time after college in Fort Collins, Colorado - even more mountains! I then spent the next decade or so in Pittsburgh and Medellín, Colombia. Now, I’m back in West Virginia. John Denver said, “country roads, take me home” and he was right - they always do. My home town has grown a lot since I left and I’m really proud of how far it's come and very much enjoy living here now.

Tell me how this company came to be.

Well, this team and I worked together for years at a top wealth management firm and we determined that we have very complementary skill sets and goals. Moog is a wizard at tax and financial planning, Autumn is great at building relationships and insurance strategies, and I excel at building systems and processes and running a business, so it was a natural synergy.

The value and the distinction of doing business with us is that we take great joy in forging relationships where people are empowered to grow and preserve their wealth. We’re so excited about the foundation we’ve built and really enjoy working together in this vibrant, innovative environment.

What are your key responsibilities and specialties?

The things I do best are building relationships, creating systems and processes, and the day-to-day operations of running a business. I’ve had a few businesses of my own that have done well and have managed multi-million dollar shops, so I’m able to take those skills and apply them here. I’m also a stickler for compliance, so I get to be the driver of that department as well.

Could you share your career history and expertise?

I’ve spent the bulk of my career working in the legal industry. My first job was at a law firm as a young teenager so I learned to love processes at an early age. I’ve also spent some time in the real estate and nonprofit industries. When I changed career paths to work in the financial industry, I recognized how the skills I’ve learned throughout my career really fit perfectly in this space.

What is your personal motivator that brings you to work every morning?

So, I’ve spent a lot of time in the nonprofit and volunteer world because helping others has been my main driver since I was a young child, and it still is. As a kid, I volunteered with animals and the elderly. When I worked in the legal field, starting during summers when I was first old enough to work, I always chose to work at firms that fought for the rights and safety of workers and business owners. When I noticed a big gap in the communication between nonprofits helping the populations I chose to serve, I created a 501(c)3 nonprofit to build a bridge to close that gap.

So when I came into the financial field, a lot of people who know me were a bit confused. I’d get comments like, “Now your job is helping rich people get richer!” Well, yes, I do that and I’m proud of how I can help improve someone’s life in that way. But not only does it help the person whose tax bill was reduced, but we’ve now also helped their family, helped their kid go to college, helped the people they can now hire on as employees get a job, or helped change the world through the business they were able to create with all that extra capital. It’s more of a ripple effect that allows us to give back to more people than we ever could have on our own.

How do you spend your time outside of work?

Most people who know me call me a workaholic because I actually love what I do in the office, but I still do have a social life, believe it or not! In my spare time, I spend time with my family and friends (and cats!), first and foremost. I also have a passion for dance! Salsa, Kizomba, and Bachata are my favorites and I love the community and cultures that surround that.

I’m fairly involved in my community and am working on the last bits of restoring and documenting the history of my 1830’s historic house. This year, I published my first children’s book about all the locations in my historic neighborhood which is the first of many in a series. Those who know me won’t be surprised to find a cat as one of the main characters.
